Record 230 People Cross English Channel in Single Small Boat

A small boat carrying 230 people has crossed the English Channel from France, setting a new record for the largest number of people to make the perilous journey in a single vessel. The crossing broke the previous record of 165 set just weeks earlier in July. A deflated dinghy was later pictured on the quayside in Dover.

Criminal Gangs Cramming More People onto Boats

A Home Office spokesperson condemned the incident as evidence of the 'reckless and dangerous tactics employed by criminal gangs' who 'continue to put lives at risk by cramming ever greater numbers of people onto unseaworthy vessels.' Experts warn that increasing passenger loads dramatically raise the risk of capsizing. At least 84 people died attempting to cross the Channel in 2024, according to the United Nations.

Overall Crossings Down 43% in 2026

Despite the record-breaking single crossing, the overall picture in 2026 is markedly different from recent years. Provisional Home Office figures show that 14,819 people have crossed by small boat between 1 January and 8 August — a 43 percent drop compared to the same period last year and 16 percent lower than 2024.

Boats that arrived in the UK from August 2025 to August 2026 carried an average of 67 people — more than double the 2021 average — suggesting criminal networks are compensating for fewer crossings by overcrowding vessels. Nearly all people arriving by small boat claim asylum. Under international law they may remain in the UK while their application is considered. Small-boat arrivals made up 42 percent of all UK asylum applications in the 12 months to March 2026.
