Reform UK's Donations Scandal Overshadows Party Conference as Insiders Demand Changes

Reform UK's annual party conference has been overshadowed by a damaging undercover investigation that revealed senior party aides apparently discussing how to circumvent UK electoral law by routing foreign donations through a British intermediary. Political analyst Chris Mason, writing for the BBC, says the party has been "winded" by the controversy at exactly the moment it was hoping to lay out a bold policy vision.

The Sting and Its Fallout

Channel 4 News published footage in which Reform's former chief of staff Dan Jukes and head of policy James Orr were filmed by undercover reporters discussing a scheme in which an American donor would give money to the party through his UK-resident son. Such an arrangement would breach rules requiring donors to be registered UK voters or UK-registered companies.

Both Jukes and Orr were suspended pending an internal investigation. Leader Nigel Farage initially dismissed the footage, saying he had not been listening to the conversation and that no illegal money had been taken. But the row has drawn calls from Labour and the Liberal Democrats for a Metropolitan Police investigation. Scotland Yard said it was assessing the information.

Internal Reform Calls for Change

Despite the crisis, Farage's admirers within the party are pressing for the organisation to develop a more robust operation as Reform positions itself for power at the next general election. Conference participants told the BBC that while they remained loyal to Farage personally, the party needed stronger structures and discipline to be taken seriously as a potential governing force.
