Researchers achieve breakthrough in AI-powered early cancer detection
A team of international researchers published results of a clinical trial showing that an artificial intelligence system could detect multiple types of cancer from blood samples at early stages with an accuracy rate of over 94 percent, surpassing current conventional screening approaches.
Technology and methodology
The AI system analyzed circulating tumor DNA in blood samples using machine learning algorithms trained on thousands of patient samples. The system was tested on detecting colorectal, lung, breast, and pancreatic cancers at stages when treatment is most effective.
Clinical significance
Early cancer detection dramatically improves survival rates. The researchers noted that the technology could potentially become a routine blood test available in clinical settings within five years. Further large-scale clinical trials are planned before regulatory approval is sought.
