Rheinmetall to acquire French factory to expand armored vehicle production

1 min read

Rheinmetall, Europe's largest defense contractor by revenue, has announced it will acquire a French factory as part of its aggressive expansion strategy to meet surging demand for armored military vehicles across Europe and beyond.

The acquisition reflects the broader consolidation underway in Europe's defense industry as governments scramble to rebuild military stockpiles depleted by aid to Ukraine and to meet NATO spending commitments. Rheinmetall has been one of the primary beneficiaries of this trend, with its order book reaching record levels.

The French facility is expected to manufacture Lynx and other next-generation infantry fighting vehicles. By establishing production in France, Rheinmetall will also be better positioned to compete for French Army contracts and to access French defense export markets.

The deal represents a deepening of Franco-German defense industrial cooperation, which has at times been strained over competing national interests. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu welcomed the investment as contributing to European defense industrial base strengthening.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said the acquisition would allow the company to deliver on its commitments to European defense customers faster and at scale. The company has been opening or acquiring facilities across Europe, including in Ukraine itself.
