Romania Scrambles Fighter Jets After Air Target Detected Near Ukrainian Border

1 min read

Romania scrambled fighter jets on September 25, 2026 after an air target was detected in airspace near the Romanian-Ukrainian border, the Romanian defense ministry reported.

Romania has been on heightened air defense alert given the frequency of Russian drone and missile attacks on western Ukraine, which borders Romania. Debris and stray drones from Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory have on multiple occasions crossed into Romanian airspace, leading NATO member Romania to regularly intercept suspicious aerial objects.

Context

Romania is a NATO member state sharing a border with Ukraine and has repeatedly raised concerns about Russian strikes near its airspace. The incidents have prompted Romania and other NATO flank states to maintain heightened readiness and conduct more frequent air patrols.
