A roof collapsed at a tutoring center on the outskirts of Lahore, Pakistan, on Tuesday, killing at least 14 children and injuring five others. The tragedy occurred at Basti Eid Gah near Qurban School on Ferozepur Road, where dozens of students were attending classes when the ceiling of a room inside a residential building gave way.

Children Buried in Rubble

Rescue workers and residents rushed to the scene after the roof of the makeshift learning centre caved in, pulling students and debris from the wreckage. The tuition centre was operating in a building that was undergoing repair work on its upper floors, with the children assembled in a room directly beneath the construction zone.

Five Arrested, Including Owner

Police arrested five people in connection with the collapse, including the building owner and the contractor responsible for the ongoing construction work. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said the arrests followed the filing of an FIR citing alleged negligence and unsafe construction practices. Investigators are examining whether substandard materials, illegal modifications, or poor maintenance contributed to the structural failure.

Government Response

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences and directed authorities to ensure accountability. Punjab provincial officials announced that a full structural assessment of the building would be conducted. The collapse has renewed calls for tighter safety inspections of informal education centres, many of which operate in residential and partially constructed buildings across Pakistan.
