Russia Claims Ukraine Hit Refineries; Kyiv Calls It Fake

1 min read

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak claimed on October 14 that Ukraine had launched strikes against oil refineries in the Saratov and Ryazan regions of Russia. The announcement was quickly and categorically denied by Ukrainian officials.

Dmytro Lytvyn, adviser to the Ukrainian presidential communications office, dismissed Novak's claims as false, calling them fake information designed to spread disinformation. Lytvyn stated that Ukraine had not conducted any such strikes.

This is not the first time Russia has made such allegations. Ukrainian and Western analysts have repeatedly pointed to a pattern of Russian disinformation campaigns aimed at fabricating Ukrainian military actions or exaggerating the effectiveness of their own defensive measures.

The incident follows a broader trend in which Russia attempts to use alleged Ukrainian strikes on its energy infrastructure to justify escalatory actions or to garner domestic support. Independent verification of such claims remains difficult due to restricted access to the affected regions.

Ukraine has maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding strikes on Russian territory, but officials have consistently denied involvement in incidents they characterize as Russian fabrications. International observers have urged all parties to rely on verified information sources amid widespread information warfare.
