A Russian kamikaze drone struck an emergency medical vehicle in Ukraine's Sumy region in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, injuring the ambulance driver and a paramedic. The attack occurred while the medical crew was responding to a call.

Details of the attack

"Around 5 in the morning, an emergency medical crew was traveling to a call in the Svesk community. On the way, in the territory of Yampilska community, a Russian drone hit the vehicle," said Sumy region head Oleg Hryhorov on Telegram.

Despite the threat of a follow-up strike, colleagues quickly reached the scene and evacuated the injured crew. "A 44-year-old driver and a 59-year-old paramedic who were in the ambulance are currently receiving medical assistance," Hryhorov added. Both injuries were described as non-serious.

Attacks on medical vehicles

Attacks on ambulances and medical personnel are prohibited under international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes. Russian forces have repeatedly targeted emergency vehicles throughout the conflict in Ukraine, drawing condemnation from international medical organizations and human rights bodies.
