Russia Fires Iskanders, Kalibr Missiles and 332 Drones: Air Defense Destroys 293 Targets
During the night of October 16–17, Russian forces carried out one of the largest combined strikes against Ukraine, deploying multiple types of weaponry simultaneously. According to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the attack involved Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kh-22/32 cruise missiles, four sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles, and 332 Shahed-type strike drones — including 31 reactive S-8000 Bandero, Gerbera models, and Parodiya-type decoy drones.
Air Defense Response
As of 08:00 preliminary reports, Ukrainian air defense forces neutralized 293 of the launched weapons. Specifically, crews shot down all four Kalibr cruise missiles and intercepted 289 Shahed-type drones, including 23 reactive variants and other types. Confirmed hits on infrastructure were also recorded.
Context
The massive combined attack follows a pattern of Russian forces escalating strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. President Zelensky stated that the previous day's attacks targeted more than 15 key electricity generation and transmission facilities across multiple regions of Ukraine. The scale of the overnight attack placed significant strain on Ukrainian air defense resources.
