Russia blamed for Leipzig airport drone plot — Germany's response falls short

Germany's government, which spent weeks hesitating to name Moscow, officially blamed Russia on September 1 for a foiled attack at Leipzig Airport. On August 4, security personnel discovered an explosive-laden drone with a detonation mechanism in the secure zone between Ukrainian cargo aircraft — the airport is a major transit hub for military supplies to Ukraine.

Evidence matches Russian methods

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the drone configuration, components, explosives, and ignition technology all matched known Russian hybrid operation patterns. He described the preparation as showing "a high degree of technical expertise and considerable organizational effort." Chancellor Friedrich Merz had earlier promised that perpetrators of hybrid attacks would "pay a price" — but stopped short of naming Russia himself.

A measured response

Berlin's countermeasures: the Russian House cultural center in Berlin is to be closed, as is the Russian consulate general in Bonn. Entry rules for Russian citizens will be tightened, and Germany will step up action against Russia's shadow fleet. Russia denied responsibility and called the measures a "grave mistake." Deputy Security Council head Dmitry Medvedev threatened "direct strikes against German military production facilities" supplying Ukraine.

Is Germany at war with Russia?

Critics say the response is inadequate. Greens security spokeswoman Sara Nanni called it too little, too late, arguing Berlin should act harder against Russia's shadow fleet to cut off war funding. CDU security politician Roderich Kiesewetter demanded delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine and activation of NATO Article 4 consultations. Security expert Sönke Marahrens of Kiel University told DW that Germany is "not at war, but confronted with hybrid activities" — a definition that stops well short of Article 5's threshold. The incident comes just days before the September 6 Saxony-Anhalt state election, where the AfD — which opposes continued Ukraine support — is polling near a potential absolute majority.
