Russia strikes Ukrainian train minutes after Boris Johnson's convoy passes

A Russian drone struck a stationary locomotive at Yahodyn station in western Ukraine on Sunday, hitting a point just 2 kilometres from the Polish border. No passengers or crew were killed, as an evacuation order had been issued 15 minutes before the strike.

Boris Johnson and European officials narrowly escape

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt had all passed through the same station on their way back from a security conference in Kyiv. Johnson said he did not know what "warped logic" drove Putin to strike a stationary locomotive on the Polish border. Former CIA Director David Petraeus, who was at Yahodyn at the time, described the incident as "terrifying" and called it "the act of a truly barbaric leader trying to terrorize Ukrainian civilians".

Ukraine says diplomatic train may have been the target

Ukraine's state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia stated that the train had left the station earlier than scheduled due to constant threats of Russian strikes, and that "quite possibly, the target of this drone could have been the diplomatic train." Russia, for its part, claimed to have struck "railway infrastructure" in western Ukraine without acknowledging the near-miss with Western officials. The passenger train was evacuated just 15 minutes before impact. Carl Bildt said passengers on his train were briefly ordered to prepare for evacuation before being given the all-clear to continue to Poland.

Context: rail corridor under pressure

The Yahodyn–Dorohusk rail crossing is one of the key entry points for Western aid, officials, and journalists traveling between Poland and Ukraine. A successful strike on a diplomatic convoy would mark a major escalation in Russia's war strategy. The incident drew immediate condemnation from European capitals.
