Russia Using Modified Shaheds to Target Ukrainian Power Lines Ahead of Winter
Russia has been deploying modified Shahed drones equipped with wing extensions, dubbed by observers as having a distinctive appearance, to strike Ukrainian power transmission lines (PTL). The adaptation allows the drones to better target the relatively thin cables of transmission infrastructure, increasing the risk of widespread power outages as winter approaches.
The tactic represents an evolution in Russia's campaign against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. While previous attacks largely focused on transformer stations, substations, and generation facilities, the targeting of the transmission lines themselves poses additional challenges for repair crews, as damaged high-voltage lines require specialized equipment and take longer to fix.
Analysts note that successful strikes on key transmission lines could cause cascading failures across the grid, potentially leaving large urban areas without power for extended periods during the winter months when heating demand is at its peak.
Ukrainian authorities have acknowledged the threat and are working on both defensive measures and accelerated repair protocols. International partners have been supplying replacement equipment and technical expertise to help Ukraine maintain grid functionality.
The approach is consistent with Russia's broader strategic goal of undermining civilian morale and straining Ukraine's economic and social fabric through persistent attacks on critical infrastructure.
