Russia wages increasingly open hybrid war in EU and NATO's eastern flank
European governments are increasingly attributing a pattern of destabilizing incidents across the EU and NATO's eastern flank to deliberate Russian hybrid warfare. In recent months, drone explosions and airspace violations have been recorded over Poland and Romania, while arson attacks have targeted warehouses and logistics hubs connected to Ukraine aid shipments. Moldovan authorities have also reported sabotage operations on infrastructure.
Pattern of escalation
Intelligence agencies and government officials in Poland, Romania, and the Baltic states have publicly stated that the incidents bear the hallmarks of Russian state-directed operations. Unlike earlier acts of sabotage which were harder to trace, these attacks are increasingly conducted without full deniability, analysts say — suggesting Russia is deliberately signaling its willingness to extend the conflict beyond Ukraine.
NATO response
NATO has reinforced air policing missions across the eastern flank. Member states have also increased surveillance of suspected Russian intelligence networks operating under diplomatic cover. EU interior ministers are coordinating efforts to counter Russian sabotage operations on European soil. The incidents have intensified debate within the alliance about triggering Article 5 collective defense provisions in response to hybrid attacks.
