Russian Defense Minister Awards Corvette Commander Who Fired at Danish Helicopter

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov awarded a combat merit medal to the commander of the corvette Soobrazitelny for what the Russian military described as “skilled and decisive actions” after the ship fired signal flares toward a Danish Armed Forces helicopter in international waters near the Danish town of Gedser. The decoration was announced by Russia’s Defence Ministry on Telegram.

The Incident

The corvette Soobrazitelny intercepted a Danish military helicopter in the Baltic Sea region near the international waters off Gedser. Russian forces fired signal rockets at the helicopter, an action that was condemned by Denmark and NATO allies as provocative and dangerous. The incident added to a pattern of Russian naval and air provocations against NATO member states in the Baltic region.

The decision to award the ship’s commander instead of investigating the incident signals Russia’s official endorsement of the confrontation. The Baltic Sea has become an area of heightened tension as NATO has increased its military presence in response to the war in Ukraine.
