Russian Drones Strike Turkish Civilian Ship, Captain Killed

1 min read

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that two Russian drones struck a Turkish civilian vessel transporting corn in neutral Black Sea waters. The attack claimed the life of the ship's captain, while the fate of at least one other crew member remains unknown.

Zelensky shared the information on social media, condemning the attack as a deliberate strike on civilian shipping. The vessel was engaged in lawful commercial activity at the time of the attack.

Pattern of Black Sea Attacks

The incident follows a series of Russian attacks on civilian and commercial shipping in the Black Sea region. Russia has repeatedly targeted vessels carrying Ukrainian agricultural exports, which include corn, wheat, and sunflower oil destined for international markets.

Ukraine exports significant quantities of grain via the Black Sea corridor, and Russian interference with these routes has contributed to global food supply concerns since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

International Implications

The targeting of a Turkish-flagged vessel represents a particular escalation, as Turkey is a NATO member and has maintained diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine throughout the conflict. Ankara has previously condemned attacks on its shipping and called for protection of civilian vessels in the Black Sea.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called on international partners to help enforce safe passage for civilian ships and to hold Russia accountable for attacks on neutral vessels operating in international waters.
