Russian Strike on Kyiv Region Kills One, Injures 10 and Leaves 3 Missing
Russia hit Kyiv Oblast with a massive combined strike of attack drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles overnight into Monday, October 19. One person was killed, 10 were injured and three more are considered missing, according to regional governor Tymur Tkachenko and the State Emergency Service.
“In Irpin in the Bucha district, six people were injured, including three children. Three more people are missing. The search is under way,” Tkachenko said. The emergency service later confirmed the totals: one dead and 10 injured, three of them children, with the fate of three people still unknown and the figures being updated.
Damage across the region
In the Bucha district, 11 private houses, six cars, a production building, a warehouse and an educational institution were damaged, and windows were blown out in apartment buildings. In the Vyshhorod district, a private house, five cars and an infrastructure facility were hit. Rescuers have contained a fire at the warehouse and are working to extinguish it.
Local accounts of the Irpin strike differ in detail. Acting mayor Anzhela Makeieva said falling debris from Russian aerial targets started a fire in the private sector and caused injuries. Former mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said Russia hit “one of the largest enterprises in Irpin,” which was seriously damaged, while city councillor Mykhailyna Skorik reported “direct ballistic hits” and dozens of damaged homes.
A wider overnight attack
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia used 16 ballistic missiles during the night in several waves, calling it a deliberate attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region. Energy and infrastructure were the main targets, but a medical clinic, a school, a metro station and ordinary homes were also damaged, he said. Energy facilities in 11 regions were attacked, more than 10 were damaged and at least 550,000 families lost power, with repair crews at work.
Elsewhere, near Lviv, debris from a downed Russian drone damaged six houses and six cars in the village of Zubra, governor Maksym Kozytskyi said; no casualties were reported. It followed an earlier ballistic missile attack on Kyiv that killed a 21-year-old woman and damaged the metro. More in World news.
