Scientists Use AI to Design 16 Entirely New Viruses in Lab Experiment

Scientists have successfully created 16 functional viruses whose entire genetic codes were designed by artificial intelligence, according to a new study that marks a landmark moment in synthetic biology.

The research team used an AI system to generate novel virus genomes from scratch, without basing them on any naturally occurring virus. All 16 AI-designed viruses were then synthesised and tested in a laboratory setting, where they successfully replicated, confirming their viability.

The experiment raises both excitement and concern in the scientific community. Proponents argue that AI-designed viruses could accelerate the development of vaccines, cancer treatments and antiviral drugs by providing research tools that nature never produced.

Critics, however, warn of biosecurity risks. The ability to design new pathogens using AI could, in theory, be misused to engineer dangerous agents. The findings have already prompted discussions about the need for stronger oversight of AI applications in life sciences.
