Serbia's Vučić Announces Snap Parliamentary Elections for October

📅 Aug 21, 2026⏱ 2 min read💬 0 comments

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced early parliamentary elections to be held on either 18 or 25 October, in a televised address on state broadcaster RTS on Thursday. The exact date will be confirmed within days. The vote had originally been scheduled for December 2027.

Months of Protests Prompted the Decision

The announcement comes after more than a year and a half of recurring mass protests against Vučić's government and widespread corruption. The demonstrations were originally sparked by the collapse of the roof canopy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, which killed 16 people. Students led the initial protests against corruption, and they were later joined by broader segments of society demanding political change and democratic accountability.

Vučić May Eye Return as Prime Minister

Vučić, 56, has served as Serbia's president since 2017, having previously held the prime ministerial post for three years. In late June he had promised to resign within weeks to make way for both parliamentary and presidential elections, though on Thursday he left open when he would step down to trigger a presidential vote. Analysts suggest he may be positioning to return as prime minister. Serbia has been an EU candidate since 2012 but maintains close ties with Russia and China. The EU has demanded improved rule of law, anti-corruption measures, and alignment of foreign policy.
