Seven people were hospitalized with severe injuries after a car deliberately plowed into a group of pedestrians in the English city of Derby. British police have arrested a man in his 30s in connection with the incident, which occurred late Saturday evening.
According to the Derbyshire Constabulary, the suspect drove a black Suzuki Swift into the crowd on Friar Gate at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time. The impact left a trail of destruction, prompting authorities to establish a large police cordon while forensic teams examined the scene.
Emergency services transported the seven victims to nearby hospitals. In a statement released on Sunday, police confirmed that while the injuries sustained were "severe, but not life-threatening." Authorities also took the opportunity to dispel online rumors, explicitly stating: "Contrary to speculation on the internet, we can confirm that nobody lost their life in the incident."
The driver remains in police custody. He is facing preliminary charges of attempted murder and intentional grievous bodily harm. Investigators allege that the man caused the severe injuries "with intent" through dangerous driving.
