Simon Levy convicted of murdering two women and raping third in London

A London jury has found serial sex offender Simon Levy, 40, guilty of two murders and rape after he killed two women and sexually assaulted a third while being monitored by the Metropolitan Police. The verdict was returned after 13 hours of deliberation at the Old Bailey following a majority direction from the judge.

The crimes

Levy murdered Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo, 53, in March 2025, and killed 39-year-old Sheryl Wilkins five months later. Both women were engaged in sex work in the Tottenham area of north London. He also raped a third woman in January 2025 in the same car park where Wilkins was later found dead. The court heard that Levy, who lived with his mother in Tottenham, had convictions for attacking women dating back to 2018, including a sexual assault on a prison officer in 2022.

Police failures acknowledged

The Metropolitan Police acknowledged to the BBC that Sheryl Wilkins' death could have been avoided had there not been multiple points of failure in handling Levy. Two Met officers are under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for their 2024 decision to downgrade Levy from high-risk to medium-risk. Two British Transport Police officers were moved to other roles due to what their force described as incompetence in handling the case.

Political reaction

Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jones said the fact that Levy was able to inflict such devastating harm after being released raised serious questions requiring urgent answers. The Met's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Kevin Southworth described the situation as a collective system failure and a tragedy beyond words. The Crown Prosecution Service also apologised for shortcomings in its efforts to have Levy remanded in custody. In February, Levy had already been convicted of sexually assaulting 10 women on London Underground trains, details that can now be publicly reported.
