Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared on September 18 that he has no intention of fulfilling NATO’s Article 5 collective defense obligations or participating in the defense of allies in the event of a Russian attack. The statement was made during a speech to students and hospital staff in Prešov.

During his speech, Fico did not once mention Russia as an aggressor or source of military threat to Europe. Instead, he accused European leaders of “bellicose rhetoric” and claimed not to understand who exactly NATO is supposed to defend against.

“It seems… that sometimes there is a tendency to substitute an inability to solve problems such as illegal migration, competitiveness, high energy prices with these belligerent conversations,” Fico stated.

Fico’s position represents a significant challenge to NATO unity, as Slovakia is a full alliance member and Article 5 commitments are considered the cornerstone of collective defense.
