Starlink Speed Restrictions Undermine Ukraine's Defense Against Fast Shahed Drones
Ukrainian forces have been using Starlink's military version Starshield to operate interceptor drones that catch and destroy fast reactive Shahed drones, which Russia has been deploying in large numbers. However, soldiers reported that during the night of October 13-14, they encountered connectivity loss with Starshield at speeds above 160 km/h, causing several important missions to be aborted.
Presidential adviser and radio technology expert Serhii Beskrestnov, known by the call sign "Flash", confirmed the problem: "Starlink is used in the most effective solution currently available (interceptors) for protecting our skies from reactive Shaheds. In effect, our partners' actions deprive us of one of the few options to defend the country against reactive Shaheds."
This is the latest friction point between Ukraine and SpaceX over Starlink access policies. The news comes as Russia has been escalating drone attacks on Ukrainian territory, making high-speed interception technology increasingly critical for Ukrainian air defense.
