Sudan: Thousands Trapped as RSF Threatens Key City, Atrocity Fears Rise

Thousands of displaced civilians sheltering in a key Sudanese city face renewed peril as international leaders issued stark warnings that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are believed to be preparing to attack. The warnings come as the conflict in Sudan continues to generate one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

The Threat

Governments and humanitarian organizations monitoring the conflict say intelligence assessments indicate the RSF is mobilizing near the city, which has become a major refuge for people fleeing fighting elsewhere in Sudan. If the RSF launches an attack, officials say there are serious fears that atrocities similar to those committed at other locations in the conflict will be repeated.

Humanitarian Stakes

The city has absorbed an enormous number of internally displaced persons since fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF began.
