A suspicious discovery that prompted a major police investigation in rural New South Wales has turned out to be a lifelike doll rather than human remains, authorities confirmed following forensic testing.

The discovery near Oallen

Two men found a suitcase on the roadside near Oallen, a small community approximately 230 kilometres south-west of Sydney, and contacted police after suspecting the contents might be human. Officers launched a significant investigation and forensic teams were deployed to the scene.

Superintendent Linda Bradbury confirmed to media that initial examination of the item raised concerns due to its highly realistic appearance, prompting the deployment of specialist forensic resources.

Forensic testing resolves mystery

Following comprehensive forensic testing, investigators confirmed the object was a commercially produced lifelike doll — sometimes called a realistic or silicone doll — and not human remains. The case was closed without criminal charges being laid.

The incident highlighted how realistic modern manufacturing techniques have become, with forensic experts noting that initial visual identification can be genuinely challenging with high-quality lifelike figures.

Police response

Despite the unusual resolution, police praised the two men for reporting the discovery, noting that their decision to contact authorities was the correct course of action given the circumstances.
