Residents of Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine will face a longer nightly curfew starting September 16, 2026. The restriction will run from midnight until 5:00 a.m. — one hour longer than the 00:00–04:00 schedule in effect since the beginning of summer.
The announcement was made by Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration. He explained the shorter curfew had been a temporary accommodation for local farmers.
At the beginning of summer, the duration of the curfew was temporarily reduced to 04:00. These changes were introduced for a specified period at the request of Sumy region farmers — the extra morning hour was needed for seasonal field work, Hryhorov stated.
With the harvest season concluding, authorities are restoring the standard wartime schedule. The full 00:00–05:00 curfew resumes from the night of September 15–16.
The temporary relaxation reflected a practical balance between wartime security requirements and the economic needs of the agricultural sector. Farming is a critical livelihood in Sumy region. The oblast borders Russia and has been subject to frequent cross-border shelling and drone attacks since the full-scale invasion began.
Nighttime movement restrictions are a core element of civilian protection under martial law, limiting casualties during nocturnal strikes. By granting farmers one additional pre-dawn hour, regional authorities temporarily eased restrictions to allow essential agricultural activity during the 2026 summer harvest period.
The restoration of the 05:00 end time signals that the seasonal justification for relaxed restrictions no longer applies. Regional military administrations across Ukraine regularly review curfew parameters based on security conditions and civilian needs.
Violations of curfew rules in areas under martial law carry significant penalties. Residents of Sumy region must observe the revised schedule effective September 16. The change does not affect other aspects of the martial law regime currently in force across Ukraine.
