Sybiha jokes about 'coffee' trick for Orban's UN secretary-general bid

1 min read

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented on reports that the US administration is promoting former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the post of UN secretary-general. He wrote on X, as reported by European Pravda.

Sybiha said he is confident that, if appointed, Orban would use “his masterful skills of veto and blackmail, honed for years by disrupting important EU decisions.” He then joked about inviting Orban “for a coffee”, referring to the EU summit in late 2023, when Orban left the meeting room, allowing leaders to approve the start of Ukraine's EU accession talks without a veto from Budapest.

“We can share with the rest of the world our wonderful experience — inviting him for coffee at the right moment,” Sybiha wrote.

What was reported earlier

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US administration is promoting Orban's candidacy, counting on support from China and Russia. In May, investigative journalists said that people around the MAGA wing of the Republican Party were considering a scenario in which Orban would get a UN post and protect himself from prosecution at home. Hungarian investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi said the former prime minister is preparing a refuge in the US in case of legal trouble. More in politics.
