Tanker attacked in Strait of Hormuz, fire breaks out on board
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported on October 2, 2026 that a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical shipping lanes. A fire broke out on board following the impact.
Crew safe, attacker unidentified
According to UKMTO, the crew remains safe and there is no information about environmental damage from the incident. The agency has not disclosed the name or flag of the vessel. No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Escalating attacks in the region
This latest incident follows a series of attacks on shipping in the same waterway. Three Liberian-flagged oil tankers came under fire while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on September 29. The repeated targeting of tankers in this strategic chokepoint raises concerns about maritime security and oil supply chains.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as the transit route for roughly 20% of global oil trade.
