Teen Gunman Kills Three Children and Teacher at Oregon Elementary School
A 16-year-old gunman attacked Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon on October 16, killing three children and one teacher. The attacker was subsequently stopped by an armed civilian passerby who entered the school building, according to the New York Times citing a local police briefing.
Attack Begins at 1 PM
At approximately 1:00 PM local time, the armed teenager used a long-barrel firearm to shoot through locked doors and force his way into the elementary school. The first emergency call came at 12:59 PM from a car driver who had been shot at outside the school. Within minutes, multiple calls flooded the 911 system as the shooting continued inside.
Armed Bystander Stops Attack
Before law enforcement arrived, an armed civilian who happened to be passing by heard the gunfire, entered the building, and neutralized the shooter. The intervention prevented what could have been an even larger number of casualties. Investigators were working to determine the 16-year-old shooter's motive and how he obtained the weapon.
