Thailand's Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform, died on Thursday evening at the age of 47 at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok. She had been receiving care there since collapsing in December 2022. The Royal Household Bureau announced her passing on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Three Years of Illness

The princess was hospitalized on December 15, 2022, after losing consciousness while training her dogs for an army exhibition. A mycoplasma bacterial infection — typically associated with pneumonia — was diagnosed as the cause. Despite intensive care from a royal medical team, her condition worsened steadily. Since late May 2026, doctors had been monitoring a severe uncontrolled infection affecting multiple organ systems.

Her father, King Vajiralongkorn, signaled the gravity of her condition in his 2023 New Year greeting card, which showed the royal couple dressed in somber black — an image widely read by Thais as an expression of deep concern for the princess.

A Life Devoted to Justice

Born on December 7, 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha studied law at Thammasat University before earning a master's degree and a doctorate from Cornell University Law School in 2005. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the protection of the rights of the accused. She went on to work as a public prosecutor and served as Thailand's ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014.

Her most celebrated initiative was the Kamlangjai — or Inspire — project, which helped rehabilitate incarcerated women before their release to improve their chances of reintegrating into society. In 2017 she was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Her advocacy led the UN General Assembly to adopt the internationally recognized Bangkok Rules — guidelines on the treatment and welfare of women in detention.

Society cannot grow if there is instability and injustice. Without the rule of law, without a good justice system, it is always chaos — Princess Bajrakitiyabha, 2013 interview with The Associated Press.

Royal Funeral and Succession

King Maha Vajiralongkorn has ordered royal funeral rites of the highest honor at the Phiman Rattaya Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace in Bangkok, in accordance with Thai royal tradition.

Her death has renewed discussion about Thailand's line of succession. Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, the king's youngest son, remains the presumptive heir under the country's tradition of male primogeniture. However, Princess Bajrakitiyabha's extensive public service had long led observers to speculate she might serve as regent or play a central role in any future transition. She is survived by her parents and siblings.
