Tkach Describes Violent Vienna Arrest: Masked Officers Smashed Car Windows

1 min read
Mykhailo Tkach, the Ukrainska Pravda journalist detained in Vienna, has described the circumstances of his arrest in vivid detail. According to Tkach, officers wearing masks and carrying weapons shattered the windows of the vehicle he was traveling in and forced both him and his cameraman to the ground. The journalists were pinned to the road for approximately 30 to 40 minutes before Tkach realized that the people surrounding them were law enforcement officers rather than unknown assailants. The operation was carried out with a level of force typically associated with high-risk counterterrorism or organized crime operations. Tkach described the experience as traumatic and disorienting. He said that throughout the initial phase of the operation, there was no clear indication that the people conducting it were police officers or that any legal process was underway. The description of the arrest drew sharp condemnation from press freedom advocates, who argued that the manner of detention was wholly disproportionate for journalists and raised serious questions about Austrian law enforcement practices toward foreign nationals. Austrian authorities have not commented on the specific circumstances of the arrest. The incident has elevated diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and Austria, with Kyiv demanding explanations and assurances regarding the treatment of its citizens.
