Trump diverts $52M military aid from Europe and Mideast to Latin America

1 min read

The Trump administration is planning to redirect approximately $52 million in military assistance funds from Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia and Iraq to four countries in Latin America, according to The Washington Post, despite opposition from members of Congress.

Congressional moratorium ignored

The State Department notified Congress of its intentions in September. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks responded by introducing a moratorium to block the transfer. However, the administration announced on Wednesday that it would proceed regardless, allocating the funds to Panama and three other Latin American nations.

Strategic pivot toward Latin America

The reallocation reflects the Trump administration's broader foreign policy shift toward the Western Hemisphere and away from traditional security partnerships in Europe and the Middle East. Critics in Congress argue the move weakens American security commitments to NATO partners and reduces leverage in strategically important regions.

European partners already increasing defense spending following Russia's war in Ukraine are likely to view the decision as a further signal that Washington's security priorities are shifting away from the continent.
