Argentine President Javier Milei gathered his entire cabinet in the grand White Hall of the presidential palace in Buenos Aires for a prime-time national address on Thursday evening — devoted to a single subject: Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands, which Argentines call the Malvinas. No other issue touches the country's national identity as deeply as the fate of the islands, over which Argentina fought a costly and ultimately unsuccessful war against Britain in 1982.

New Measures to Reinforce the Claim

In the televised speech, Milei declared that the Malvinas are Argentine by both history and law, denying the islands' residents any right to self-determination. Milei has previously shown little interest in traditional Argentine nationalism on the Malvinas issue — he has expressed admiration for Margaret Thatcher, Britain's wartime prime minister.
