Trump Redirects $52M US Military Aid from Europe to Latin America

The Trump administration has notified Congress of its intention to redirect $52 million in Foreign Military Financing from European and Middle Eastern countries toward conservative governments in Central and South America, the Associated Press reported.

Where the Money Is Going

The funds — originally allocated to Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia, and Iraq — will instead support Panama, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. The State Department said the reallocation aims to fight narcoterrorism in the Western Hemisphere and help further secure the Panama Canal.

The move came shortly after Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, during which he pledged additional security support. Rubio's trip aligned with the administration's declared priority of asserting dominance in the Western Hemisphere — an approach critics have likened to a revival of the Monroe Doctrine.

The Broader Context

The State Department emphasised the geopolitical dimension, saying the redirected funds would prevent adversaries from establishing strategic footholds in the hemisphere — an implicit reference to China, which has been expanding its economic and political presence across Latin America.

Officials stressed that the reallocation does not amount to a full suspension of military assistance to Iraq, Tunisia, Slovakia, or North Macedonia. The decision fits a pattern of the Trump administration deprioritising European security partnerships while reinforcing ties with right-wing governments in the Americas.
