Tusk calls emergency security meeting after Russian strikes near Polish border

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an emergency security meeting on Sunday afternoon in response to a series of Russian drone and missile strikes that took place dangerously close to the Polish border with Ukraine.

The decision to convene the meeting came after an incident in which a train carrying European officials — including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and a senior adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — was forced to stop near the border when a nearby Ukrainian train came under Russian drone attack.

Heightened border concerns

Poland has been monitoring Russian military activity along the Ukrainian border with growing alarm. Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierzwiński earlier called Russia the “enemy of the free world,” signaling Warsaw's increasingly hardened stance.

The emergency consultations focus on assessing the risk to Polish territory and coordinating with NATO allies on a response. The incidents underscore how the Russian war against Ukraine is increasingly threatening regional stability across Central Europe.
