A sweeping majority of the American public is urging an immediate conclusion to the ongoing United States military campaign against Iran, even if the strategic objectives set by President Donald Trump's administration remain unfulfilled.
According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll conducted between March 26 and 28, 66% of respondents favor ending the conflict as quickly as possible. In contrast, only 27% believe the US should sustain its military efforts until all goals are achieved, despite the prospect of a protracted war. Another 6% remain undecided.
The survey highlights a notable partisan split regarding the conflict. While the general public overwhelmingly favors withdrawal, Republican voters are more divided: 57% support continuing the campaign to secure administrative targets, whereas 40% prefer a rapid exit regardless of the outcome.
Public apprehension is heavily fueled by domestic economic blowback. Ordinary Americans are already grappling with surging fuel costs, and over half of the poll's participants anticipate the war will inflict predominantly negative consequences on their personal financial well-being. Notably, public appetite for escalation is practically nonexistent, with a mere 7% of Americans supporting a potential US ground offensive in Iran.
The widespread unpopularity of the war poses a significant threat to the Republican Party ahead of the crucial November congressional midterm elections. President Trump's approval rating plummeted to 36% by late March, marking the lowest point of his tenure since he took office in January 2025.
In response to mounting domestic pressure, the administration appears to be signaling a pivot. Earlier this week, President Trump announced plans to wrap up the Iranian campaign "in two to three weeks." Echoing this urgency, the head of the Pentagon stated that the coming days "should be decisive" in determining the trajectory of the conflict.
