Two women who were wounded in a Russian drone strike on a commuter train in Sumy region on September 8 have died in hospital, announced Sumy Regional Military Administration chief Oleh Hryhorov on September 9. The victims were aged 60 and 79 and had sustained severe injuries. Two other people from the attack remain in critical condition.

Background of the Attack

On the afternoon of September 8, Russian forces struck a commuter train in Sumy district with drones. Rescuers evacuated 19 passengers, and initially ten people were reported injured. Throughout September 8, Russia attacked trains in multiple Ukrainian regions, including a strike on the Kyiv–Sumy route that required the evacuation of 90 passengers, and an attack on a Dnipro–Zaporizhzhia train that killed a conductor.

Targeting of Civilian Transport

Hryhorov condemned the strikes, stating that Russia deliberately targeted civilian transport infrastructure with drones. The attacks on trains represent an escalation in Russia's campaign to disrupt Ukrainian civilian movement and logistics far from the front lines.
