UEFA Set to Drop FIFA Tournament Boycott Threat

UEFA is set to drop its threat of boycotting FIFA competitions after receiving assurances that there will be no repeat of FIFA president Gianni Infantino's controversial plan to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors, BBC Sport has learned.

Background to the Dispute

The threatened boycott emerged from tensions between UEFA and FIFA over governance and commercialisation. Infantino had previously floated proposals that would have seen private equity firms acquire financial interests in the World Cup, a plan that UEFA viewed as a threat to the integrity and independence of football's governing structure.

European clubs and national associations expressed strong opposition to the privatisation plans, with UEFA formally threatening to pull out of FIFA-sanctioned tournaments if the proposals were pursued.

Assurances Reached

According to BBC Sport, UEFA has now received sufficient reassurances from FIFA that the private investor plans have been shelved. In return, UEFA will withdraw its boycott threat, allowing the organisations to re-engage in a more cooperative relationship.
