Millions of households in the United Kingdom could miss out on a 150-pound discount on their energy bills this winter unless they take one simple step before 23 August: ensuring their name appears on their electricity bill.

The government's Warm Home Discount scheme provides 150 pounds off energy bills for eligible households. Suppliers will check customer records as of Sunday 23 August to determine who qualifies. Households receiving means-tested benefits including Universal Credit, Pension Credit, housing benefit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance are eligible for the discount.

Who qualifies and why you might be missing out

The discount is applied automatically by energy companies to eligible accounts, but only if the claimant's name is on the electricity bill. Someone who has recently moved home may find they are not named on the new bill, disqualifying them even if they receive eligible benefits. People using pre-payment meters who top up with a key or card must also ensure their household account is registered in their name.

The scheme applies to around six million households across England, Scotland, and Wales. Energy suppliers with more than 1,000 customers are required to participate.
