British prosecutors on Tuesday announced charges against a UK man accused of working as an agent for Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU, gathering and passing information of potential use to Russian intelligence operations.

The defendant, whose identity has not been fully disclosed pending court proceedings, is alleged to have carried out surveillance activities and facilitated the movement of Russian operatives in the United Kingdom. Prosecutors say the activities took place over a period of at least two years.

The case is the latest in a string of espionage prosecutions in the UK linked to Russia, following high-profile cases including the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury in 2018 and more recent arrests of individuals linked to alleged Russian sabotage plots.

UK Security Minister said the charges demonstrate Britain's commitment to protecting national security and countering the threat posed by Russian intelligence services. "We will not tolerate foreign states using UK soil to conduct espionage operations," the minister said.

If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison under the Official Secrets Act and related counter-espionage legislation.
