UK Does Not Support Trump's Diesel Deal with Putin

1 min read

The United Kingdom announced it does not support US President Donald Trump's agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin that allows Russia to export millions of tons of diesel fuel to American and global markets. The announcement adds London to a growing list of Western capitals opposed to the October 9 deal.

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky have also voiced strong opposition to the agreement. Zelensky called it unfair and dishonest, while Merz said it is unacceptable. The UK's position reinforces growing concern that the deal undermines sanctions imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Context

Trump announced the diesel deal after speaking with Putin, framing it as part of his America First energy policy. Critics argue it effectively gives Russia additional revenue to fund its war in Ukraine. Despite the diplomatic row, NATO has confirmed that US arms supply to Ukraine through the PURL mechanism continues to operate normally.
