UK Sanctions Israeli West Bank Settlements, Israel Shuts Jerusalem Consulate

The United Kingdom announced sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, describing settler violence against Palestinians as ethnic cleansing. The move was coordinated with France and Canada, marking a significant shift in Western policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told parliament the action represented the beginning of a new approach that not only calls out injustice and suffering but acts. He stated that the UK government agrees ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is taking place in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists.

What the Sanctions Cover

The sanctions will ban settlement goods from entering the UK and target companies and individuals providing services for settlement expansion. Over the next six to nine months, the UK plans to introduce a comprehensive sanctions regime focused on settlement infrastructure, not Israel itself, Miliband clarified.

The UK also announced a ban on advertising illegal West Bank settlements in Britain. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the measures aimed not at the Israeli people, but in support of the two-state solution.

Israel's Furious Response

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the statement as an outrageous lie and announced counter-measures: Israel is closing the UK's consulate in East Jerusalem. The move signals one of the sharpest deteriorations in UK-Israeli relations in decades, as Britain officially aligned its position with a 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion declaring Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful.
