Ukraine and Russia Set Oleshky Ceasefire From October 27
The general staffs of Ukraine and Russia said on the evening of Friday, October 23, that a ceasefire will take effect in a designated area from the night of October 27 so that a humanitarian operation can take place in the occupied town of Oleshky.
Ukraine's General Staff said Kyiv is introducing the ceasefire in the designated area of Kherson Oblast from 03:00 on October 27, Kyiv time. It added that the Defense Forces are doing everything possible to help the residents of Oleshky and will make maximum efforts to ensure the safety and rescue of fellow citizens.
Russia confirms a 'regime of silence'
Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov said Russian forces are stopping fire in the Kherson direction and introducing a "regime of silence" from 04:00 Moscow time on October 27, 2026. According to him, engineering reconnaissance will be carried out and safe passage will be organized for a humanitarian convoy delivering socially important goods to Oleshky, to ensure the safety of people.
How the deal came about
The announcement follows a White House statement that First Lady Melania Trump had secured a truce between Russia and Ukraine in Russian-occupied Oleshky, which is suffering a humanitarian catastrophe; we covered it in White House: Melania Trump Brokers Local Ceasefire in Oleshky. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov then confirmed that Russia agreed to a ceasefire for the humanitarian mission.
Ukraine's parliamentary human rights commissioner Dmitry Lubinets said earlier that the humanitarian operation and the ceasefire would take place on October 29. The general staffs' statements name October 27 as the start of the ceasefire regime.
