Ukraine Drone Strike Kills 13 in Russia's Tatarstan Region

At least 13 people, including one child, were killed and 75 others injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan on Monday. Russian officials describe it as one of the deadliest single attacks on Russian territory since the start of Moscow's full-scale war against Ukraine.

Oil Refinery Hit Over 1,100 km From the Border

Ukraine's Armed Forces confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk was struck. Ukrainian defence technology firm FirePoint stated that its FP-1 drones were deployed in the operation. The city lies more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, demonstrating Kyiv's growing capacity to conduct long-range strikes deep inside Russian territory.

The strike lasted several hours, beginning overnight and continuing into the morning. Unverified footage on social media showed thick smoke and large flames rising in daytime, accompanied by air raid sirens.

Tatarstan Declares Official Mourning

Tatarstan's head Rustam Minnikhanov confirmed the attack and offered condolences. Mayor of Nizhnekamsk Radmir Belayev said it was a tremendous pain for all residents. A period of official mourning has been declared across the republic.

Russia's Investigative Committee stated that civilians with no military involvement were among the victims. The BBC has not independently verified these details.

Part of Ukraine's Escalating Long-Range Campaign

Kyiv has been ramping up drone strikes against Russian facilities that, according to Ukraine, finance or support Moscow's war effort — particularly oil refineries and energy infrastructure. This strike follows a previous Ukrainian attack on the same Nizhnekamsk refinery on 12 June. Russia claimed its air defences shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight and confirmed both industrial facilities and residential areas were targeted. Kyiv has not yet issued an official comment on the Tatarstan attack.
