Ukraine Drones Strike Tatarstan Oil Refineries 1,200 km Inside Russia

In the early hours of September 13, attack drones struck the industrial zone of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan, more than 1,200 kilometers from Ukraine's border. The city hosts some of Russia's largest oil refining and petrochemical facilities — critical suppliers of fuel to the Russian military.

Explosions reported, air defenses engaged

Local residents reported hearing drones flying over the city during the night, followed by a series of explosions. Russian air defense systems were observed operating near the industrial cluster, according to monitoring Telegram channels and independent Russian media ASTRA. Local authorities issued no statement on the scale of damage or any casualties.

Three major targets: Russia's fuel backbone

The Nizhnekamsk industrial zone is home to three facilities of strategic significance. TANECO, one of Russia's five largest refineries, processes more than 16 million tons of crude oil annually and is a primary source of diesel fuel, aviation kerosene for fighter jets, and automotive gasoline — all essential to Russian armed forces. Adjacent TAIF-NK refinery handles over 7 million tons of oil and gas condensate per year, supplying both domestic markets and occupying troops. The third enterprise, Nizhnekamskneftekhim, is part of the Sibur petrochemical holding and ranks among Europe's largest producers of synthetic rubber and plastics.

Escalating strikes deep into Russia

This is not the first attack on this strategically vital region. In August 2026, Ukraine's General Staff confirmed a successful strike on the TANECO refinery. In early July, surveillance footage showed a Ukrainian drone crashing on the grounds of the neighboring TAIF-NK plant. On September 10, drones again struck Nizhnekamsk. The successive strikes highlight Ukraine's growing capability to reach high-value military-economic targets hundreds of kilometers inside Russian territory — cutting off the fuel that finances and sustains Moscow's war.
