Ukraine Elected to UN Human Rights Council for 2027-2029 Term

1 min read

Ukraine has been elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the vote result, thanking all UN member states that supported Ukraine's candidacy.

What Sybiha Said

"I thank all UN member states who supported Ukraine's candidacy. Ukraine is joining the Council while continuing to defend its people and sovereignty from Russia's aggression, which has led to serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law," Sybiha wrote on X.

Ukraine's Role on the Council

As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Ukraine will have a platform to raise awareness of Russian war crimes and advocate for accountability. The council monitors human rights situations around the world and can recommend action to the UN General Assembly.

Context

Ukraine has been fighting Russian aggression since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Numerous human rights organizations have documented alleged Russian violations of international law, including attacks on civilian infrastructure, forced deportation of Ukrainian civilians, and the treatment of prisoners of war. Ukraine's election to the Human Rights Council gives the country additional diplomatic weight in pressing for international accountability.
