Ukraine Exhausts Patriot Interceptor Missiles — Washington Post
Ukraine has completely exhausted its stockpile of interceptor missiles for the US-made Patriot air defense systems, the Washington Post reports, citing two Ukrainian officials and a NATO representative.
Down to the Last Few Missiles
As of October 7, only ten Patriot interceptors remained in Ukraine's arsenal. Those were subsequently used repelling Russian attacks, and according to one Ukrainian official, only a handful now remain. A second source, familiar with the deteriorating state of Ukraine's air defense, confirmed the country had fully run out of this high-tech weaponry that is critical for protecting power plants, heating facilities, and other civilian infrastructure.
Strategic Consequences
The depletion of Patriot missiles leaves Ukraine's skies significantly more vulnerable ahead of the winter heating season, when Russian strikes on energy infrastructure historically intensify. The Patriot system is considered one of the most effective defenses against ballistic missiles and advanced cruise missiles. Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to allies for additional interceptor supplies, but replenishment has lagged behind consumption rates.
