Ukraine Tests New Drone Alert System at Gas Stations to Prevent Fire Risks

Ukraine is testing an automated drone early-warning system specifically designed for fuel stations and other fire-risk facilities, the country's State Emergency Service announced Friday. The system automatically cuts power to fuel pumps and triggers safety protocols when air-raid sirens are activated, dramatically reducing the risk of catastrophic fires or explosions during drone attacks.

The pilot program is currently operating at over 150 gas stations across 12 regions, with a national rollout planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. The system integrates directly with Ukraine's national air alert infrastructure, receiving signals that trigger the automated safety shutdowns within seconds of an alert being issued.

Officials noted that several fuel stations were destroyed or severely damaged in drone attacks over the past two years, some resulting in explosions that posed significant risks to nearby residents and caused prolonged supply disruptions. The new system is designed to mitigate these risks by ensuring rapid and automatic fuel isolation before any drone reaches the vicinity.

The project was developed jointly by Ukrainian engineers and safety experts with technical assistance from international partners. The hardware cost per station is estimated at under 5,000 euros, making a full nationwide deployment financially feasible.

The State Emergency Service also announced that the same integration approach would be expanded to other high-risk facilities including chemical storage sites, warehouses, and industrial plants. Each facility type requires custom integration due to different safety systems and fuel or chemical storage configurations.

Gas station operators who have participated in the pilot reported that the system has worked correctly in every test, with no false positives causing unnecessary commercial disruptions. The automated safety shutdowns are overridden immediately when the all-clear signal is given.
