Ukraine Successfully Tests Interceptor That Can Shoot Down Fast Reactive Shaheds

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on September 17 that a homegrown interceptor successfully shot down a reactive Shahed drone in a field test, marking a breakthrough in Ukraine's air defense against Russia's latest threat.

The New Threat: Reactive Shaheds

Over recent months Russia has dramatically shifted tactics, deploying reactive Shaheds that fly far faster than conventional propeller-driven drones. In August alone, the number of reactive Shaheds used by Russia surged by approximately 67 percent — from around 1,500 to over 2,500. Their high speed makes them much harder to intercept with existing systems.

Breakthrough Test

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine General Mykhailo Drapatyi briefed Zelensky on the successful downing. The interceptor was developed in Ukraine and passed field trials. "We will scale this up. Step by step we find answers to Russian threats and create our own, Ukrainian means of pressure on the enemy. We are preparing new active and long-range operations," Zelensky said.

Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara had previously said in August that four candidate interceptors passed field testing and were capable of engaging reactive Shaheds.
