Ukraine Internet Will Not Collapse Despite Russian Attacks, Advisor Says
Ukraine's presidential advisor on defense technology, known by his callsign "Flash," assured the public on September 24 that the country's internet will not go dark despite Russian strikes on Kyiv data center infrastructure.
"Russia is attacking our information network infrastructure. But Ukraine is a country with maximally distributed internet channels, so the entire country will not be left without internet," he wrote on social media. "Local outages may occur, which providers will, I hope, quickly fix."
Context
The statement came after Russian strikes hit Kyiv data centers on September 24, causing disruptions for some users. The advisor warned that internet prices may rise to cover infrastructure repair costs.
Distributed network architecture has been a deliberate resilience strategy throughout the war. Ukraine relies on domestic fiber connections, Starlink satellite systems, and multiple international routing paths to maintain connectivity under sustained attacks. Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine's digital and energy infrastructure as winter approaches.
