In an official statement, Ukraine has issued a formal apology to the citizens of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania following a series of incidents last week in which Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) inadvertently entered Baltic airspace.
Heorhii Tykhyi, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified the situation in an exclusive comment to the Delfi news outlet. He emphasized that the Ukrainian armed forces never intended to route drones toward the Baltic nations.
"Ukraine did not direct and could not have directed drones towards the Baltic countries," Tykhyi stated. Following a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the drone crashes, Ukrainian officials concluded that Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems were responsible for forcing the UAVs off their designated flight paths.
Offering a direct apology, Tykhyi remarked, "We sincerely apologize to our friends in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania for these events. I assure you that we and our Baltic allies share the conviction that these incidents and the threats faced by all our countries have one root cause: Russian aggression against Ukraine."
The airspace breaches occurred during a recent wave of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian port infrastructure near St. Petersburg. The electronic interference led to several drones straying off course, resulting in crashes across neighboring nations:
Ukrainian authorities have maintained continuous communication with their European allies throughout the investigations to ensure transparency and reaffirm their strategic partnerships in the face of ongoing regional security threats.
